Blue Carpet Newcastle

The Blue Carpet in Newcastle is a public art installation by renowned British designer Thomas Heatherwick. Sutton Vane Associates were responsible for lighting this urban design feature that was designed to be an icon of the North. The art installation is named after its specially designed paving surface made from crushed blue glass which SVA carefully lit to create a sparkly, star like surface.

The unique benches seem to be peeled from the very pavement below them which SVA played on with the lighting design, highlighting these features with bright and colourful LED Striplights which are playfully draped into the openings. The lighting was designed to look almost utilitarian like, as if the pavement had been ripped up and one was able to see the cables and pipes running underneath.
