Keble College Chapel Oxford

Sutton Vane Associates was commissioned to make the range of wonderful mosaics stand out. The mosaics run right around the Grade 1 listed chapel and are an important part of the appearance of the chapel. They had been rather hidden. The lighting equipment is completely concealed and is fully dimmable so that its brightness can be set to suit the activity in the chapel. Also individual mosaic panels can be lit while leaving the others unlit. This can be very dramatic, an example is shown on the left.

The lighting control was also improved, there are push buttons to select regularly used lighting scenes for normal activities. A set of sliders give control of the lighting of individual mosaics and the existing pendants. In a side chapel is the famous painting ‘The Light of the World’ by William Holman Hunt. The lighting of the painting was designed to bring out the light and the warmth of the painting and make it stand out. Spotlights were hidden in the historic architecture, providing a general wash of light and accentuating the face, the halo and the lantern.
