Scale Lane Footbridge
The unique Scale Lane footbridge is the first swing bridge in the world to allow people to ride on it while it opens and is now an iconic landmark for Hull, designed by Jonathan McDowell and Renato Benedetti.
Sutton Vane Associates lit the multi-national and international award winning bridge that also provided interest and excitement to the surroundings. The walkway lights were designed to not only light the footpath but also glisten outwards creating magical reflections on the water.
A line of red LEDs along the roof emphasize the shape of the building and the bridge itself, and chases along the structure when it moves. A fairground like sense of playfulness is created by synchronized light and sound effects whilst the bridge is in motion. The bridge and its lighting proved to be a real jewel in the crown for Hull, which went on to win city of culture for 2017.
